Getting a new set of keys for your BMW used to be pretty simple. Modern remote keys have plenty of security benefits and make it easy to get into your car and hit the road — particularly if your BMW or MINI has the Comfort Access feature.

But for all this convenience, they can be a real pain to get copies of. Maybe you want a spare in case you lose your primary key, or perhaps you share your BMW with a few family members and want everybody to have a key of their own. Maybe your existing key is just damaged, and you need something fresh.

Before shelling out on a new remote key fob, it's worth making sure your existing one really needs replacing. If it's not working, it could just be that the battery has run out. If you've got a key fob that you have to insert in a slot on your BMW's steering columnyou might be able to skip this step. Many of these fobs have rechargeable batteries designed to be topped up automatically during use; as soon as it's put in the ignition slot, it starts charging.

If you've got a more recent fob, though, you will likely have a non-rechargeable CR battery, which will need replacing periodically. It's a simple DIY job that only requires popping off your fob's rear panel and switching out the coin cell battery.

Depending on your vehicle and usage, a battery should last anywhere from one to three years before needing to be replaced. If you've tried replacing the battery and your key fob still isn't working, or if you've lost your fob entirely, it's time to get a new one. This means they are delivered pre-programmed for your specific vehicle, to ensure complete compatibility.

As standard, our keys do not include the internal key blade — the traditional key that slides out of the base of the fob — which can easily be switched over from your existing key fob. If you're looking for a spare rather than a replacement, you're going to need an internal key blade, which can be added when you order. Without it, you'll likely be unable to access your vehicle next time your fob's battery runs flat. All documents sent must be valid — expired documents will not be accepted.

Your key will come pre-programmed for your vehicle, but will still need to be activated before use. To do so, hold your new key fob flat against the low key battery indicator on the side of the steering column. If this doesn't work, you may need to take your existing key fob out of signal range when activating your new key, to prevent interference. To do this, unlock your BMW with the existing key, then have somebody take it a reasonable distance from your vehicle.

With all the doors closed, turn the ignition switch to KL-R the first positionswitch off within five seconds and remove the key. Within 30 seconds, press and hold the unlock button, then whilst holding it, press the lock button three times within 10 seconds.

To activate your new key fob for use with Comfort Access, it is necessary to code your vehicle to delete the existing key profile and set the new key for use with Comfort Access. Those of you who bought a used car are most likely familiar with the discomfort of not knowing what exactly has happened to your car or how many active key fobs for it could still be floating around.

This particularly applies to spare key fobs that might remain in the possession of the vehicle's previous owner or owners. The VIN for the early MGB, approximatelymay be found stamped on a plate that is secured to the inner right hand fender looking from the rear of the carlocated just in front of the radiator.

The VIN for the later MGB, approximately tomay be found stamped on a plate secured to the left hand door post, and on a plate secured to the top of the dashboard. In addition to the stamped plates shown above, there are other places where the VIN is stamped: Starting with about carthe VIN was stamped into the right front frame rail on cars for the North American market. This continued through the end of production. Starting in latethe number was also stamped on the right rear frame rail in the trunk.

These numbers were stamped on the trim deck at Abingdon after the car was painted of course. There are also many other numbers on the car, on plates that are riveted, welded or screwed on; these are not the VIN number. There are also numerous assembly numbers particularly on late carsthese also have nothing to do with the VIN.

Click here to see an example. Please note that the "model year" for a vehicle is usually different than the "production year" when it came off the assembly line, and in some places the date of first registration is used as the model year on the vehicle title, which can be different yet again.

Contrary to logic and common sense, VIN numbers are not necessarily easy to translate directly into a precise "build date" when your MGB rolled off the assembly lines, as they are not necesarily sequential. At any rate, those records are not available to me. That book is still in print and the information is copyrighted, so unfortunately it cannot be reproduced for free on this website. You can purchase a Heritage Certificate aka BMIHT certificate for your car, showing production data and original color and options, compiled from original factory records.

A great number of these people only get to ask this question when they notice that their transmission has a problem.

A couple of decades ago, the only available transmission had a gear stick and three pedals. Knowing how to work the clutch and shift gears then was a rite of passage. Currently, cars come with various types of transmissions with each having its own advantages and disadvantages.

These multiple transmission types, leave the average person confused. One of the reason is that their functionality on the surface seems quite similar. However, the truth of the matter is that they are very different. The transmission is a device that transfers the power produced by the engine to the wheels. It significantly determines how the car moves and how fast. Just as the word suggests, it uses the gear lever and the clutch to select and engage the gear ratios.

On the other hand, the clutch separates transmission and the engine. It is a coupling device that makes it possible to change gears while the engine is running. Manual transmission.

It is reliable, inexpensive and has great fuel economy. Moreover, it gives the driver more control, low net weight and supports the push to start functionality.

This is the most common type of transmission available on our roads today. It changes gears automatically relieving the driver the hassle of manually handling the clutch and shifting gears. Automatic transmission.

A such, there is a gentle learning curve and a simplified driving experience. The trade-off is mechanical complexity, and high maintenance cost, and low fuel efficiency. These two are similar in the sense that they are a hybrid of the manual and the fully automatic transmissions. They try to make the most of the two worlds.

However, this is where the similarities end. A semi-automatic transmission achieves the convenience of the automatic while running under a mechanical layout of a manual transmission.A vehicle identification number VIN also called a chassis number or frame number is a unique code, including a serial numberused by the automotive industry to identify individual motor vehiclestowed vehiclesmotorcyclesscooters and mopedsas defined in ISO content and structure and ISO location and attachment.

VINs were first used in in the United States. Inat the request of the US government, US car manufacturers and the Automobile Manufacturers Association were involved in the creation of the new, standardized vehicle identification numbering system named the Vehicle Identification Number VIN with an agreed upon digit sequence and concealed chassis markings of this VIN.

Up to that time, states used the engine number to register and title cars and trucks which became a problem if the engine was replaced, which was fairly common at the time. There are vehicle history services in several countries that help potential car owners use VINs to find vehicles that are defective or have been written off. The first three characters uniquely identify the manufacturer of the vehicle using the world manufacturer identifier or WMI code. A manufacturer who builds fewer than 1, vehicles per year uses a 9 as the third digit, and the 12th, 13th and 14th position of the VIN for a second part of the identification.

Some manufacturers use the third character as a code for a vehicle category e. The first character of the WMI is the region in which the manufacturer is located. Each manufacturer has a unique system for using this field. Most manufacturers since the s have used the eighth digit to identify the engine type whenever there is more than one engine choice for the vehicle. Example: for the Chevrolet CorvetteU is for a 6. One element that is inconsistent is the use of position nine as a check digitcompulsory for vehicles in North America and China, but not Europe.

The 10th to 17th positions are used as the vehicle identifier section or VIS. This is used by the manufacturer to identify the individual vehicle in question. This may include information on options installed or engine and transmission choices, but often is a simple sequential number. In North America, the last five digits must be numeric.

The year was encoded by some manufacturers, especially General Motors and Chrysleras "A" since the digit VIN was not mandatory untiland the "A" or zero was in the manufacturer's pre placement in the VINyet Ford and AMC still used a zero for Subsequent years increment through the allowed letters, so that "Y" represents the year On April 30,the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration adopted a final rule amending 49 CFR Part"so that the current 17 character vehicle identification number VIN system, which has been in place for almost 30 years, can continue in use for at least another 30 years", in the process making several changes to the VIN requirements applicable to all motor vehicles manufactured for sale in the United States. If you are looking to buy a caravan then this is something you should definitely take note of.

Here are Coeliac UK's top 10 tips for everyday eating. All packaged food in the UK and the EU is covered by a law on allergen labelling, meaning you can tell whether or not a product is suitable for a gluten-free diet by reading the ingredients list. If a cereal containing gluten has been used as an ingredient in the product, it must be listed in the ingredients list (no matter how little is used). Often, these ingredients will be highlighted in bold.

Instead, switch to gluten-free alternatives of your favourite foods, which you will find in most supermarkets and health food stores. Gluten-free substitute foods include pasta, bread, crackers, bread rolls, cereals and more. Those medically diagnosed with coeliac disease can receive some gluten-free staple food on prescription from the NHS. Fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, cheese and eggs are naturally gluten-free, so use these as the basis to your meals.

Quinoa, teff, amaranth, polenta, buckwheat, corn, millet and tapioca are just some of the naturally gluten-free grains which can be included in the diet. Just check the labels to make sure you are using uncontaminated versions. Try swapping traditional breadcrumbs for polenta crumbs, opt for gluten-free buckwheat or rice noodles and pasta and try baking with quinoa for gluten-free alternatives.

Gluten-free alcohol includes cider, wine, sherry, spirits, port and liqueurs, but remember that beer, lagers, stouts and ales contain varying amounts of gluten and are not suitable for a gluten-free diet. Gluten-free beers are available in some supermarkets and restaurants, but make sure you only drink those that are labelled in this way.

Even a tiny bit of gluten can be enough to cause symptoms for someone with coeliac disease, so make sure you minimise the risk of cross contamination with gluten-containing foods. Do this by washing down kitchen surfaces before use, using separate butters, spreads and jams to minimise the spread of crumbs and invest in some toaster bags to keep your gluten-free bread separate.

Instead, try making your own pasta sauces and gravies using cornflour, arrowroot or potato starch to thicken them for a gluten-free option. Finding the right gluten-free substitute for your usual gluten-containing ingredients is a matter of personal taste, so spend time in the kitchen getting used to gluten-free flours and baking aids.
